Things You Might Not Know About Raleigh, NC

Uncovering the Surprising Facts and Hidden Gems of the City of Oaks.

Raleigh, North Carolina is a city that often flies under the radar despite being one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic cities in the Southeast. Known as the “City of Oaks” for its tree-lined streets, Raleigh offers a unique blend of Southern charm, cutting-edge innovation, and historical significance. While locals may be familiar with its vibrant downtown and booming tech industry, there are many fascinating facts and hidden treasures that even longtime residents might not know.

Here are some intriguing things you might not know about Raleigh, NC—facts that highlight the city’s rich past, cultural vibrancy, and promising future.

1. Raleigh Is One of the Few Planned State Capitals

Unlike many U.S. cities that grew organically, Raleigh was one of the few cities in the country that was planned and built specifically to serve as a state capital. Founded in 1792, it was designed on a grid system with Union Square at its center—where the State Capitol still stands today. This intentional design helped Raleigh grow in a well-organized and sustainable way, which is part of why the city continues to thrive today.

2. The City Is Part of the “Research Triangle”

You’ve likely heard of the Research Triangle, but what exactly does that mean? Raleigh forms one corner of this innovative region, along with Durham and Chapel Hill. The triangle gets its name from the three world-class research universities located in each city: NC State University in Raleigh, Duke University in Durham, and UNC-Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill.

The Research Triangle Park (RTP), located just minutes from downtown Raleigh, is one of the largest and most successful research parks in the country. It houses more than 300 companies, from tech startups to global corporations, making Raleigh a major hub for innovation, science, and high-paying jobs.

3. Raleigh Has a Thriving Art Scene—And It’s Free to Enjoy

Raleigh is home to a remarkable array of museums and art venues, many of which offer free admission. The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) not only features an extensive collection of global works but also offers an outdoor park filled with large-scale installations, trails, and gardens.

The city also supports a strong local arts community. First Friday, held every month in downtown Raleigh, is a city-wide celebration of local artists and galleries, with pop-up exhibits, open studios, live music, and food trucks.

4. Home to One of the Oldest Amusement Parks in the Country

Pullen Park, located near NC State University, is one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the United States. It opened in 1887 and still offers rides, including a historic carousel built in 1911, pedal boats, and a miniature train.

In addition to being a fun family destination, Pullen Park is a piece of Raleigh’s living history and a testament to the city’s focus on preserving green space and community recreation.

5. It’s a Beer Lover’s Paradise

You might be surprised to learn that Raleigh has emerged as one of the top craft beer cities in the country. The city and surrounding areas boast more than 30 breweries, each offering its own take on ales, lagers, IPAs, and sours.

Popular stops on Raleigh’s beer trail include Raleigh Brewing Company, the first woman-owned brewery in North Carolina; Big Boss Brewing, known for its industrial-chic vibe and classic beers; and Trophy Brewing, which combines top-tier pizza with unique brews. Many breweries offer live music, food trucks, and dog-friendly patios, making them perfect weekend hangouts.

6. It’s a City of Greenways and Trails

Raleigh is one of the greenest cities in the Southeast—not just in terms of trees, but in accessible outdoor space. The city maintains more than 100 miles of greenway trails, making it incredibly easy to enjoy nature, whether you're walking, biking, or running.

The Capital Area Greenway System connects dozens of parks, nature preserves, and lakes, such as the scenic trails around Shelley Lake, Lake Johnson, and Umstead State Park. It’s an ideal city for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone who values an active lifestyle.

7. Raleigh Was a Hub of the Civil Rights Movement

While often overshadowed by other Southern cities in civil rights history, Raleigh played a pivotal role. Shaw University, located in downtown Raleigh, was the birthplace of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960, a major force in the civil rights movement.

The university is one of the oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the South and continues to play an important role in higher education and social justice.

8. It’s a Great Place for Entrepreneurs

Raleigh frequently ranks among the top U.S. cities for startups and small businesses. With a highly educated population, access to research facilities, and a supportive business ecosystem, Raleigh has become a magnet for entrepreneurs.

Incubators like HQ Raleigh and the support of local organizations such as Innovate Raleigh make it easier than ever for new ideas to flourish. Compared to other tech hubs like San Francisco or Boston, the city's affordability also gives entrepreneurs a financial edge.

9. Raleigh Has Its Own Food Scene Identity

While Raleigh isn’t always the first city people think of for food, the culinary scene here is gaining national recognition. From Southern classics to global fusion, there’s a restaurant for every taste.

Local favorites include The Pit, famous for Eastern-style North Carolina barbecue; Bida Manda, a standout Laotian restaurant with creative cocktails; and Brewery Bhavana, a unique combo of brewery, dim sum restaurant, and bookstore. The city also hosts several food festivals each year, such as Brewgaloo and the Raleigh International Food Festival, celebrating both local and global cuisine.

10. The People Are Really That Friendly

It’s not just a Southern stereotype—Raleigh is consistently ranked as one of the friendliest and most welcoming cities in America. Whether you’re a newcomer or a lifelong resident, you’ll find that community spirit runs deep. Neighborhoods are tight-knit, and it’s common to see block parties, farmers markets, and family-friendly events throughout the year.

Discover More with a Trusted Local Expert

From its role in history to its future in tech, from tree-lined trails to buzzing breweries, Raleigh offers a truly unique lifestyle. But whether you're a long-time resident or considering a move to the area, the best way to understand Raleigh's full potential is to work with someone who knows the city inside and out.
